00899: ‘Access is Denied’ message from Windows when trying to start BLM or BBj

Title:

‘Access is Denied’ message from Windows when trying to start BLM or BBj

Description:

After installing the BBj and licensing everything locally, any attempt to start the BASIS License Manager or BBj would return an “Access is Denied (5)” error message. This was a Windows error message not a FLEXlm or BBj error.

The directory the BASIS License Manager and BBj were installed had incorrect permissions, the SYSTEM user did not have access. Administrator’s had access and the Guest accounts had access, but the SYSTEM account did not.

The BLM and BBj are being started as a service at boot time, it is a process owned by SYSTEM. The SYSTEM account didn’t have read or write permissions to the drive or the directories where the BASIS License Manager and BBj was installed.

Resolution:

Ensure that the SYSTEM user has read/write/execute permissions to all drives that contain applications being run as a Service.
