00543: SNMP.NLM corrupting CLIB.NLM causing Novell Data Server to fail with an Error 12

Title:

SNMP.NLM corrupting CLIB.NLM causing Novell Data Server to fail with an Error 12

Description:

Error 12 occurs when attempting to open a file via the Data Server.
It has been reported that the SNMP.NLM that is included and loaded with ArcServe Backup software Version 6.0 is corrupting the Novell Clib tables. (ArcServe Backup Software is created by a company called Cheyenne.)

First determine the following:

1. SETOPTS bit is being set for Data Server Access:

        >Print hta(opts)

You should see byte 4 being set to $20$ (see Commands Manual for further information on setting and interpreting the setopts bit for Data Server Access). Type the following to set the setopts for Data Server Access:

        setopts $00000020$

2. Verify the Pro5srv.nlm is running on the Novell server. This can be determined by typing the following at the Novell server console prompt:

        :Modules

This will list all NLM’s running on the server. Also check for the SNMP.NLM at this time. To load the Data Server type the following at the Novell console prompt:

        load pro5srv.nlm

3. Test opening a file via the Data Server:

        open(1)”/<novell_server>.”

Resolution:

After deterring that it is not a setup issue and the file opens via the Data Server are still failing, it is probable that the SNMP.NLM has corrupted the Novell CLIB tables.

CLIB.NLM is used by many NLM’s including the Basis Novell Data Server.

To test/solve this immediately:

1. Unload all applications and NLM’s that use the CLIB.NLM including the ArcServe and the Basis Novell Data Server product.
To unload the PRO5SRV.NLM) type the following at the Novell console prompt:
        :unload pro5srv.nlm

2. Unload the ClLIB.NLM and then re-load it.

3. After re-loading CLIB.NLM, load the PRO5SRV.NLM and test file opens via the Data Server as outlined above.

Do NOT re-load the ArcServe NLM’s.
