OPENing a file takes a very long time

Description:

Virus checking utilities may cause this type of behavior. Each OPEN took a couple of seconds, it appears that the virus checking utility was verifying that each file being opened with write permission was not an executable. 

Resolution:

Turning virus checking off improved performance over 5X.
